Atlantic Wind Test Site

At North Cape, the Atlantic Wind Test Site, a joint initiative of the federal and provincial governments, has been involved in the development and testing of wind energy systems for more than a decade. A number of wind turbines can be viewed operating at the site as they convert the energy contained in moving wind, into electricity and feed it into the local electrical grid. This wind generated electricity helps reduce the amount of electricity generated from fossil fuels but the primary function of AWTS is to conduct research and development (R&D) in wind energy technology.     Typically, AWTS has a number of R&D and testing projects, each investigating different aspects of technology underway. Information on activities at AWTS, and on wind energy in general, is available at the North Cape Interpretative Centre. Group tours of AWTS can also be arranged.
